A conical mound on a land surface, caused by the freezing of water in the ground. It is a product of frost heaving, but is unusual in that it requires a great concentration of water in a relatively small subsurface volume. Usually a frost mound is of seasonal duration. The transient sighting of this rim, between its obscuration by the rest of the sun and its obstruction by the horizon, is sometimes credited with being the origin of the green flash. But, while the color of the flash is provided by the green rim, the size and transient nature has more to do with multiple-image mirages.

The geostrophic wind level may be considered to be the top of the Ekman layer and planetary boundary layer, that is, the base of the free atmosphere.
