Interrupt priority level. A means of basic synchronization on uniprocessor systems in traditional BSD systems, set using thesplmacro. Interrupts with lower priority than the current IPL are not acted upon until the IPL is lowered. In many parts of the kernel, changing the IPL in Mac OS X is not useful as a means of synchronization.
